Kyle Johnston

Originally, Kyle’s training began in classical and contemporary American acting styles. By the age of 18, he had performed in stages across the nation and as far as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
He then turned to focus on his studies, receiving a BA in Drama from the University of California- Irvine. During this time, he studied with individuals of such esteem as Robert Cohen and Keith Fowler. However, he quickly discovered a prowess and passion for both physical theater and ensemble theater, and delved deeply into the worlds of clown, Grotowski method, and contact improv.
Kyle co-founded Clownma Dell'Arte, a silent red-nose clown ensemble dedicated to re-inspiring imagination in the theater and their audiences. Clownma created an eclectic variety of work ranging from single vignettes to full-length shows, and performed these pieces all across Southern California, from the street corners of Santa Ana to South Coast Repertory and beyond. Kyle played an integral role as a director of the ensemble, drafting its constitution and much of its major works while also performing with the group and training new members. In 2013, Clownma Dell'Arte brought a revamp of their critically acclaimed and fan favorite show We Are the 0% to the Fringe Mainstage at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. The show, which Kyle co-wrote, directed, produced, and performed in, was nominated for the award for “Best Physical Theater”.
